The band was founded by brothers Duane and Gregg Allman, who had previously played in various other bands, including the Hour Glass and the Allman Joys. In 1969, they formed the Allman Brothers Band along with guitarist Dickey Betts, bassist Berry Oakley, drummer Butch Trucks, and percussionist Jai Johanny Johanson.

The band's first two albums, 'The Allman Brothers Band' and 'Idlewild South,' were released in 1969 and 1970, respectively, and featured a mix of psychedelic rock and blues. However, it was the band's third album, 'At Fillmore East,' released in 1971, that really cemented their place in rock history.
