About The Guess Who:

The Guess Who is a Canadian rock band that formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1965. At the time of their formation, the band consisted of vocalist Chad Allan, guitarist Randy Bachman, keyboardist Bob Ashley, bassist Jim Kale, and drummer Garry Peterson. However, after their first album, Chad Allan left the band and was replaced by Burton Cummings, the lead vocalist and pianist for the rest of their career.

During their early years, The Guess Who’s sound blended rock, pop, and psychedelia, with Allan’s distinctive voice leading the way. They quickly became a popular live act in Canada, and released their debut album “Shakin’ All Over” in 1965, which was a hit in their home country. However, it was their third album, “Wheatfield Soul” (1969), which propelled them to international fame.

“Wheatfield Soul” contained the hit single “These Eyes”, which reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became their first million-selling single. This was followed by a string of other successful singles, including “Laughing”, “Undun”, and “No Time”, which all hit the Top 10 in the U.S. and Canada. The band’s popularity continued throughout the 1970s, with hits like “American Woman”, “Share the Land”, and “Clap for the Wolfman”.

The Guess Who’s sound evolved over time, moving away from their early psychedelic influences towards a more straightforward rock sound. Cummings’ soulful voice became the focal point of their music, and his songwriting became increasingly sophisticated and introspective. Bachman left the band in 1970 to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and was replaced by Kurt Winter and later Domenic Troiano. However, the band’s success began to decline in the late 1970s as their music became less commercially viable.

In spite of their declining popularity, The Guess Who remained an important influence on Canadian rock music, and their songs have been covered by a number of other artists. In 2000, they were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and have been praised for their role in helping to establish Canadian music on the international stage. Today, The Guess Who remains an important part of the country’s musical heritage, and their songs continue to be popular with fans of classic rock.
